Local Virginia Historical Events for Families

Hampton Roads is a region rich in history—deeply rooted in Virginia history and central to the story of the United States. From colonial settlements to key moments that shaped our nation, our local communities – Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg and Yorktown – are built around historical places and stories worth exploring.

2026 marks a major milestone as the United States celebrates its 250th birthday, and Hampton Roads will be at the heart of the celebration. Throughout the year, families can look forward to historical events, reenactments, exhibits, and community celebrations honoring both national history and Virginia state history.

Use this guide to discover upcoming local history events in Hampton Roads, including activities focused on American history, Virginia heritage, and hands-on learning experiences for kids and families.

Check back often as new historical events and celebrations are added leading up to America’s 250th anniversary (and beyond)!
