Battle of Great Bridge at Battlefield Park South (Chesapeake)

December 5 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

This two-day event is held annually near the original site of the Battle of Great Bridge which took place on December 9, 1775. Often called “Virginia’s Bunker Hill,” this short but intense battle was one of the first Patriot victories in the Revolutionary War and helped drive the British Government form the colony of Virginia.

Step back in time with us and experience the Battle and life as it was in the Revolutionary War era during this weekend of commemorative events. Experience exciting, narrated reenactments of the Battle of Great Bridge on both days, visit Patriot and British soldier’s encampments, and enjoy character portrayals, historical displays and lectures, skilled artisans demonstrating early American trades, children’s crafts and activities, a “sutler’s row” for shopping, food trucks, and more.

In addition, a wreath-laying ceremony will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., presented by the Daughters and Sons of the American Revolution. The ceremony begins at the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways History Museum at Battlefield Park and commemorates the bravery of the Patriot soldiers who fought for our freedom.

Demonstrations, displays, and other activities occur throughout the day.

A free round-trip shuttle service is provided for this event. Please park vehicles at City Hall, East Lot 5, near the intersection of Shea Drive and Albemarle Drive (306 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA). Approximately every 20 minutes the shuttle will stop at the Shea Drive parking lot and bring visitors back to the event site and back.

Concessions available for purchase.
