4-H Club Programs and Summer Camp – Norfolk & Portsmouth4-H is the youth (ages 5 to 19) development education program of Virginia Cooperative Extension. 4-H is rich with learning experiences where young people partner with caring adults and volunteers in a fellowship unlike any other program available to youth today.
Through 4-H, young people are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities that emphasize 4-H's "learning by doing" philosophy of youth development. 4-H is characterized as being community-centered, volunteer-led, Extension-staff supervised, research-based, home- and family-oriented, publicly and privately funded, and responsive to change.
During the summer, 4-H offers a range of day and residential (overnight) camps.
There are unlimited possibilities for club and/or individual member areas of interest:
Animal Science: Livestock, Horse, Pets, Poultry, Veterinary Science | Art: Arts & Crafts, Painting, Photography, Theater | Career Exploration: Communications, Presentations, Public Speaking, Leadership Development | Environmental Education and/or Outdoor Recreation | Family and Consumer Sciences: Childcare, Family Life, Financial Literacy, Sewing, Foods, Nutrition, and Health: Cooking, First Aid/CPR, Healthy Living, Personal Safety | Horticulture and Agriculture: Beekeeping, Gardening | Science, Engineering, and Technology: Aeronautics, Computer Programming, Robotics, Rocketry, Woodworking Invention

Building Leaders for Advancing Science and Technology (BLAST)BLAST offers a dynamic, three-day, residential summer experience on the campuses of Old Dominion University, Virginia Tech and University of Virginia. Through innovative hands-on sessions taught by faculty members and staff, students will explore the fun and excitement of STEM while residing in a college dorm.
Current Virginia 8th and 9th grade students with at least a C+ average and a desire to explore STEM opportunities are encouraged to apply.
BLAST is offered FREE of charge to students; however, transportation to and from the universities is the responsibility of each family. Students who have previously participated in BLAST are not eligible. -
Camp InventionSummer Camps for 1st through 6th graders that take place at local elementary schools. This one-of-a-kind weeklong experience connects science, technology, engineering and math through fun hands-on activities.
Camp Invention is led by experienced local educators and new curriculum is introduced each year, inspired by the Inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Children K-6 are presented with fun, hands-on challenges that encourage creative problem solving, teamwork, entrepreneurship, and innovation. -
Center for Bioelectronics STEM Summer Institute Program at ODUThe Center for Bioelectronics STEM Summer Institute Program is a one-week academic program for rising 6th - 11th graders and rising 12th graders who express a desire to pursue a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
The program provides students with information and research experience in various fields of bioenergy, bioelectrical science, materials engineering, and medicine in order to acquaint students with the requirements for pursuing a career in STEM.
