The Story Behind MyActiveChild.com
Have you ever moved to a new area and wondered where to even start when it comes to finding things to do with your kids?
Have you searched endlessly online for family-friendly events, swim lessons, dance classes, karate programs, or library story times—and wished it was all in one place?
Me too.
MyActiveChild.com began on a long Thanksgiving road trip in 2010 not long after the picture above this post was taken. I was driving back to Hampton Roads from Boston with my 2-year-old, my 5-month-old, and our oversized muppet of a dog—listening to Elmo singing loudly on repeat. My husband was deployed, and like many parents, I was already thinking about what we’d do the next week to stay active and connected in our community.
I kept replaying conversations from friends:
“Where’s a good dance class for toddlers?”
“Does anyone know of soccer for little kids?”
“Have you found a fun library program yet?”
That’s when the next thought hit me: What if there was just one place to find all the local activities for kids and families in Hampton Roads? A searchable, local guide with a calendar of events and listings of local programs.
And just like that, MyActiveChild.com was born.
As a former social worker, running this website combines my favorite elements of social work — supporting family and community connections — while helping local businesses market their programs to the families who need them. Facilitating these local connections supports families, small businesses, and our community all at once.
Parents today carry an overwhelming list of responsibilities, so I created MyActiveChild.com to simplify the process of finding and planning local activities. This frees up time for parents to focus on what matters most: meaningful family time, new experiences, and creating lasting memories together.
MyActiveChild.com hosts an extensive, ever-growing directory of local programs and resources for children of all ages and abilities. From our daily activities calendar to childcare, enrichment classes, camps, parenting support, and pediatric therapies, we connect parents with the local businesses and programs they’re actively searching for — all in one trusted website serving the entire Hampton Roads community.
