When to sign up for youth volleyball in Hampton Roads

I get asked about this a lot, and the honest answer is that it depends on which kind of program you’re looking at.

Recreation leagues are the easiest place to start. Our city parks and recreation departments and the local YMCA branches run coed and girls leagues, and the seasons vary by city: some play in spring and fall, some add a summer season. Ages generally run from about 9 or 10 up through the teens, usually with a weekday practice and games on Saturday. One thing they all have in common: registration closes weeks before the first practice, so look up your city’s sign-up window early. Each program’s listing below links to its own page.

Club (travel) volleyball is the bigger commitment, with tryouts, regular practices, and weekend tournaments. In Virginia the Old Dominion Region of USA Volleyball sets only the earliest allowable start date, and each club chooses its own schedule after that, so the club’s own site is where tryout dates live. A few things to check before you register

Age cutoffs are set by the program, not the school year, and they vary. Some city leagues go by your child’s age on a fixed date (September 30 in one city), while USA Volleyball clubs go by the USAV age divisions chart.

It’s also worth asking where practices and games are actually held (some city leagues play in school gyms spread across the city) and whether the fee covers a jersey. Always check the program’s own site for current dates and prices, since those change every season.
