When Parades Happen in Hampton Roads

You can find a parade happening in our area almost any season, and the list above pulls them from all over the region, from Virginia Beach and Chesapeake to Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News and Yorktown. In the fall, many community festivals include a hometown parade, often with local fire trucks, scout troops and school bands rolling down a main street.

Around Halloween, keep an eye out for the small costume parades too. They tend to be short and low key, which makes them a gentle first parade for a little one. Veterans Day parades usually follow, and those are a nice chance to talk with kids about why the day matters.

Holiday and Christmas parades are the busiest stretch of the year, with lighted floats, marching bands and usually Santa bringing up the rear. Planning a Parade Day with Kids

A little prep can turn a meltdown on the curb into a great morning. Here’s what helps:

Arrive early. Curb spots go quick, so leave enough time to find one where the kids can actually see.
Bring chairs and a blanket. Let the kids sit up front on the blanket with the grown-ups behind them. Everybody gets a view that way.
Plan for road closures. Streets along the route often shut down before the parade even starts. Check the organizer’s parking info ahead of time and expect to walk a few blocks with the stroller.
Pack ear protection for little ones. Fire engine horns and drumlines are louder up close than you remember. Find options for ear protection for kids here!
Talk about candy before it flies. Make the rule clear beforehand: nobody runs into the street for a piece of candy, no matter how good it looks.
Check the weather and the rain plan. Many organizers post updates on their page, and plenty of parades go on even in a light drizzle.
Scout the bathrooms. Find them before the parade starts, not during the marching band.
