Why There Are So Many Free Outdoor Concerts In Hampton Roads
Summer evenings in Hampton Roads come with a soundtrack, and most of it costs nothing. Nearly every city in the region runs some kind of outdoor concert series between late spring and early fall, and many families never realize how many are just a short drive from home.
Most of these events are put on by city parks and recreation departments, which treat summer music as part of the same budget that covers festivals and movie nights. Downtown business districts often run their own, usually on a weeknight, to bring people into shops and restaurants. Add in the military installations, which host occasional concerts on base, plus farmers markets, waterfront pavilions, breweries and local wineries, and you have an amazing calendar of live music and community engagement.
What These Events Are Usually Like
Admission to community concerts is typically free, seating is whatever you bring, and there is often a food truck or two (make sure to verify if you want to factor in dinner). Some series lean toward cover bands and oldies, some toward local original acts, and a few may be specifically for kids. Crowds tend to be families and neighbors rather than a concert-going crowd, which makes them easy to bring small children to.
Bringing Kids Along
A few things that make these easier:
- Get there early for parking. The music start time is usually when the lot fills, not when people arrive.
- Bring chairs or a blanket. Almost none of these have seating, and grass gets damp fast in the evening.
- Bring cash. Food trucks in smaller towns are not always set up for cards, and service can be spotty in waterfront parks.
- Check the weather policy before you leave. Rain plans vary quite a bit, and some series cancel outright rather than move indoors.
- Pick a spot toward the edge if you have a toddler. Room to wander matters more than being close to the stage.
