Where to Find Pet-Friendly Events in Hampton Roads

I get asked about this one more than you might expect! Families head out for a weekend of fun and nobody wants to leave their furry kid home on a Saturday.

The good news is that Hampton Roads has a lot of outdoor space, and most of the events can be found close to home. Waterfront parks, city festival grounds, brewery lawns and neighborhood main streets all show up regularly.

A few types of organizers account for most of the pet-friendly events you will see here:

City parks and recreation departments run a lot of what lands on this list: outdoor fall festivals, garden fests and free concert series in parks across the region. Some welcome leashed dogs and some do not, and the same park can go either way depending on the event, so the event page is the thing to read.

Breweries and restaurants with outdoor space put on a steady stream of Oktoberfests, dog parties, watch parties and weekend markets. Policies still vary from one to the next, and a patio that is fine on a normal Tuesday may not be during a packed event, so check before you load the dog into the car.

Animal shelters, rescues and pet businesses host charity dog walks, adoption days and pet costume contests. These are usually a good bet with younger kids, since most of the dogs there are used to a crowd and their owners turned up expecting to be asked.

Churches hold a Blessing of the Animals in the fall, most often in early October around the feast day of St. Francis. Dates and pet rules are set by each congregation, so check the event page for what is welcome and when.

Base family support programs run pet-friendly socials on base now and then. Access is usually limited to service members, their families and their guests, and the event page will spell out who can come.

Walking tours, car cruises and outdoor markets are outside and on the move, which makes them a natural fit for a leashed dog. Plenty of them still say no, so treat it as a question to ask rather than something to assume. When an organizer tells us pets are welcome, we tag it here.

Tips for Bringing the Dog (and the Kids)

Confirm the pet policy first. An event that welcomed dogs last year may not this year, and some venues allow dogs on the lawn but not inside. The organizer’s page (linked from each calendar event) is the place to check.

Plan for the heat. Hampton Roads summers are hot and humid, and asphalt festival grounds get hotter than the air. Bring water for the dog, look for shade, and keep the visit short on the warmest days. Fall and spring are the easiest seasons for a family outing with a pet.

Keep it simple with the leash. A short standard leash is much easier to manage in a crowd of strollers than a retractable one.

Think about your dog’s temperament. Festivals mean crowds, music, food smells and a lot of other dogs. If your pup gets anxious in that setting, a quieter walking tour or a park concert may be a better fit than a big fall festival.

Pack for cleanup. Waste bags, a towel for the car, and a mat or blanket for a dog that likes to settle in during a concert.

Bring the kids into it. A pet-friendly event is a great low-pressure way for younger kids to practice being around animals. Talk beforehand about asking an owner before petting a dog you don’t know.

If you are looking for something specific, our other lists cover plenty of outdoor events where pets are sometimes welcome: Fall Festivals in Hampton Roads, Outdoor Fall Concerts, Hampton Roads Farmers Markets and Outdoor Movie Nights. Pet policies vary event to event on those lists, so always check.

Do you organize a pet-friendly event? Add it to our free community calendar and let us know pets are welcome so we can include it here.

Community events change often, and small ones change most of all. Please confirm the date, time, location and pet policy with the organizer (each event has a link to the original source of the information) before you go.
