Welcome to Space Racers: Adventures in Space Exploration, a new hands-on exhibit created for children 3-6, opening at the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton on Saturday, July 12, 2014. Based on a new, original, half-hour animated series for preschoolers, it is filled with interactive displays and activities.

In a Hard Hat preview tour, children were invited to try out the new exhibit. Previously, the VASC did not have much for the little ones outside of traveling exhibits, at times, but this new exhibit is sure to bring back these youngsters time and again based on the excitement I felt amongst my own children and those surrounding me.

Walking up to the second floor of the center, the exhibit is divided into Mission Control and the Moon. Eagle and his friends are your guides through the solar system, encouraging pretend, play and space
exploration!

In Mission Control, dress up like an astronaut, pretend to launch a rocket and work within the International Space Station. Attempt to build blocks in a box while wearing rubber gloves and test your knowledge of the planets.

On the Moon, sit back and watch episodes of Space Racers, build and draw rockets, read about the solar system, use a vehicle to collect lunar rocks and build with blocks. There is also an interactive solar system table to explain the time of planet orbit and distance from the sun.

Join the VASC on July 12 from 11am to 3pm for Opening Day Activities including: face painting, temporary tattoos, Space Cadets program, walking on the moon activity, meet Eagle, make n’ takes and more!
