Public School Enrollment & Registration
Good news for families who are new to Hampton Roads or have kids old enough for school: general enrollment is open and ongoing year-round across all seven school districts. There’s no single deadline to beat for standard K–12 registration — you register online through your division’s portal whenever you’re ready, then schedule an in-person appointment at your zoned school to finalize. Register directly here:
- Chesapeake Public Schools – enrollment & attendance
- Hampton Public Schools – registration portal
- Newport News Public Schools – registration
- Norfolk Public Schools – student registration support
- Portsmouth Public Schools – student registration
- Suffolk Public Schools – enrollment & new student registration
- Virginia Beach Public Schools – online registration for new students
Registration requirements: Registration, and the list of items needed to register your child may vary by age and by school district. Expect to show proof of residency, your child’s birth certificate, and an up-to-date physical and immunization record (dated within 12 months of the start of school).
Kindergarten & Public Preschool
Starting your younger child in school? These two programs have their own timelines — and both are worth acting on early.

Kindergarten. Your child must turn 5 on or before September 30, 2026 to enroll for the 2026–2027 year. Registration is already open in several divisions (Chesapeake and Suffolk have both opened their 2026–2027 kindergarten registration), and the rest open through the spring. Kindergarten fills popular schools quickly, so registering early helps with placement and screening appointments.

Public preschool / Pre-K (VPI). Free and reduced-cost public preschool is available through each district’s Virginia Preschool Initiative and Pre-K programs – but seats are limited and application-based, usually with eligibility criteria and a priority application window that closes well before the school year begins. These are not first-come rolling registrations like K–12, so don’t wait to apply.
