The Crystal Gems are coming to Virginia Beach with the Beach City Con set for October 12-14, 2018.

The Steven Universe-themed convention, produced by Saga Event Planning, LLC, will be at The Virginia Beach Resort and Conference Center, said K-K Bracken, event planner.

Steven Universe is Cartoon Network show with magical beings who appointed themselves guardians of the universe. Steven goes on adventures with the Crystal Gems. Despite not being as powerful as his fellow team members, he manages to save the day. The show also emphasizes inclusion amongst all no matter what their personalities.

Bracken said Steven Universe is a hit because it is more than entertainment.

“Its message is that anyone can make the world a better place. It also deals with bullying and anxiety on an age-appropriate way,” she said.

Created by Maryland native Rebecca Sugar, she is the first woman to create a show for the network. The convention location was chosen in keeping with cartoon’s setting of the mythical Beach City.

“We wanted to have it in the Delmarva area, just like the show,” said Bracken, who lives in Ohio.

A highlight of the convention will be a question and answer session with Grace Kraft, a storyboard artist and comic author for Steven Universe. Her previous works include The Powerpuff Girls. Another special guest will be Grace Rolek, who is the voice of Connie.

Cosplay entertainers Clod and Kelly Kirstein will also make an appearance. In addition, there will be a magic show, Bracken said. Like all conventions, there will be a vendor area.
