Art Classes for All Ages at the Hermitage Museum and Gardens

Inspire someone’s creativity in 2024 with the gift of a class at the newly renovated Visual Arts School at the Hermitage Museum & Gardens! Find out more about available classes and register on this link! 

The winter season of classes begins January 13 and features: Artful Play classes (14mos to 3 years), Introduction to Clay (8-12 years), and ceramics, painting, drawing, digital photography, basket weaving, living arrangements, creativity for mental health, and monthly programs such as ‘Meditation for the New Year,’ ‘Introduction to Improv,’ and ‘PechaKucha’ for ages 12 and up unless otherwise noted.

The fresh space features stunning, open rooms with light-filled windows, brand new classrooms on the second floor including a digital lab, new ceramics equipment, and can accommodate up to 60% more students!

ARTFUL PLAY is for little ones and their caregiver: Ages 14 months–3 years

  • When: Tuesdays: February 6, February 20, March 5, & March 19, 2024 from 10:30am- 11:30am
  • Description: It’s never too soon to introduce your child to art! Spend the morning with your child making art using a variety of methods such as drawing, painting, collage, and printing. This class will stimulate their budding curiosity through singing and movement activities, engaging stories, exploratory art experiences, and nature walks.  Help foster your child’s growing mobility with new sensory and fine motor experiences. ARTful Play is an exploratory, stimulating, inviting, and safe environment for young children and their caregiver to become familiar with basic art materials, while nurturing creativity, curiosity, and developmental growth.

INTRODUCTION TO CLAY

  • Dates:  Saturdays, February 3 – 24, 2024 from 9:30am- 11:30am
  • Description: Children, ages 8–12, will expand their imagination as they explore the exciting world of clay! This 4-week class will focus on learning a variety of techniques in hand building including slab and coil construction to create functional and non-functional pieces. This class will teach the basics of working with clay and encourage experimentation through shaping clay, designing and constructing projects, and clay surface decoration and glazing.

The Visual Arts Studio offers an ongoing schedule of art courses and workshops throughout the year to fit all interests, ages, schedules, and skill levels. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist looking to hone your talents, the VAS and its knowledgeable instructors will provide a relaxing and comfortable environment for creative expression.

The Hermitage Visual Arts School (VAS) is located at 7701 North Shore Rd, Norfolk, VA 23505. Formerly the Horse and Cow Stables, the VAS is located just off of North Shore Road adjacent to the playground. Courses are offered to both adults and children throughout the year.
