Featured Camp: Summer Art Camp at The Chrysler Museum

Chrysler Museum of Art Summer Camp Norfolk VA

This summer, through exploration, experimentation, and hands-on skill-building, students will make a wide array of art at the Chrysler Museum and venture to the Perry Glass Studio for more intrigue.

With behind-the scenes access to a world-renown art collection, there’s no limit to what your young artists will make or how far their imaginations will soar. Fun and creative artmaking classes are available for youth ages 6 to 17. Space is limited.⁠

The summer studio offers process-based projects and creative themes that will allow students to create art that expresses their vision, and that families will be excited to show off!

Summer Studio sessions run each week from Tuesday – Friday. There are two sessions each day, a morning session (9:30am – 12:30pm) and an afternoon session (1:30 – 4:30pm).

Chrysler Art Studio: Artful Storytelling

Chrysler Art Studio: Artful Storytelling Ages: 6-8

Chrysler Art Studio: Artful Storytelling Ages: 9-11

Works of art tell stories. Spend this session developing characters, setting up plots, and building worlds. Explore how artists use painting, sculpture, and more to tell stories or share histories while discussing works in the Chrysler Museum of Art. Each young artist will experiment with ways to tell and illustrate their stories through painting, bookmaking, sculpture, and drawing.

Chrysler Art Studio: People, Pets, and Portraits

Chrysler Art Studio: People, Pets, and Portraits Ages: 6-8

  • Tuesday, July 10 – Friday, July 13 from 9:30a.m. – 12:30p.m.
  • Member Price: $140 Non-member Price: $175

Portraits, or works of art showing a person or animal, are in every art museum. This summer the Chrysler will take students on an adventure looking at portrait painting in its collection. Create portraits of the people and pets in your life. Learn how to create realistic portraits—building and practicing essential drawing skills– and experiment with ways to make abstract portraits using fun collage techniques. If that wasn’t enough—you will even get to do a self-portrait.  Drawing and photography skills will be practiced in this warm and fuzzy session!

Chrysler Art Studio: Printmaking and Papercutting

Chrysler Art Studio: Printmaking and Papercutting Ages: 12-14

  • Tuesday, July 11 – Friday, July 14 from 1:30-p.m. – 4:30p.m.
  • Member Price: $140. Non-member Price: $175

Very different, printmaking and papercutting are full of surprises in both the processes and product. Printmaking is the art of creating multiples and leaving a mark while papercutting is much more about forming negatives by taking away. Using diverse printmaking and papercutting techniques, participants will have the opportunity to express their ideas and check out works by print masters, like Andy Warhol and contemporary geniuses such as Barbara Earl Thomas, who created an enthralling and immersive visual experiences using light and shadow.  The best part is that each young artist will conclude this session with a print portfolio!

Chrysler Art Studio: Fabric Art Ages: 12-14

For the fashion forward students, this is a unique opportunity to explore how pattern and texture is depicted in the Chrysler’s collection and learn how to paint and print on fabric. Young artists will dye a variety of textiles (bandanas, clothing, and totes) then block print patterns and/or text onto the material. For further embellishment, paint can be added as well. It’s wearable art—there’s nothing better!

Chrysler Art Studio: Painting Ages: 6-8

From watercolor to tempera and from Pablo Picasso to Amy Sherald, this art class will get wet and wild with paint! Students will learn tried and true techniques with a variety of paint media. They will also be challenged to take risks and think out of the box using surprising tools to apply paint to paper, canvas, and more.  We have the supplies, young artists bring ideas, dreams, and visions!

Chrysler Art Studio: Thinking in 3D

Chrysler Art Studio: Thinking in 3D Ages: 9-11 

  • Tuesday, August 1 – Friday, Aug 4 from 1:30p.m. – 4:30p.m.
  • Member Price: $140. Non-member Price: $175

Take ideas into three dimensions and experiment with basic building and modeling techniques in cardboard, plaster, air-dry clay, and wire to test how to make a sculpture strong and sturdy. In this session, participants will be problem-solving and developing critical thinking that might save the world or just offer a pleasurable opportunity to play, build, and create an amazing three-dimensional work of art.

Students and instructions will meet in the Diamonstein Education Workshop. All classes will spend time in the galleries and use the Museum as a resource.

All art materials will be provided. Bring a refillable water bottle—young artists will have access to water fountains. Bring a snack to enjoy during the break!
