Juneteenth 5K Freedom Run & Walk (Chesapeake)

When: Saturday June 19 - Saturday July 3 2021
Description: Celebrate Juneteenth this year by participating in the Southeastern Virginia Chapter of National Black Nurses Association Virtual 5k Freedom Run & Walk.  We will celebrate our liberty and continued freedom by running or walking a 5K virtually.  A portion of the proceeds will support nursing scholarships.  Participants will receive a virtual certificate of appreciation and freedom run medal.  The virutal run/walk will be on June 19, 2021 in celebration of Juneteenth and end on July 3, 2021.  Participants will have 2 weeks to submit results.

Waterways to Freedom Tour (Norfolk)

Description: Join Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander, author of Waterways to Freedom, on historic June 19th, for a walking tour of Underground Railroad sites in downtown Norfolk. Hundreds, if not thousands, of African-Americans made daring escapes to the north via ships visiting Norfolk's waterways. Learn more about Norfolk's heritage and implications for the present. The tour begins at Fountain Park next to the BB&T building at 500 E. Main Street. The Department of Neighborhood Development can validate parking for the Fountain Park Garage adjacent to Fountain Park. The address for the garage is 130 Bank St, but it can be entered around the corner on Plume St. Although breaks will be provided, please wear comfortable clothing and footwear, and you may want to bring a water-bottle. REGISTRATION IS LIMITED TO 25.

Norfolk Arts dedication of Bloomberg Asphalt Art Project

Description: The project titled The Gathering Place was painted by resident volunteers working alongside local artist Danettea Evans. The Gathering Place mural features images that highlight the history of double-dutch, flowers gathered in community, designs from African American quilts and directional symbols from the Underground Railroad. The street mural incorporates design techniques that promote pedestrian safety. Following the dedication featuring an original poem by Ayana Askew, Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate, a double-dutch showcase will take place. The celebration includes free food, the Norfolk Police Department “Copsicle,” face painting, photo booth and music.

Description:
Hidden History: The Banjo” will premiere on Juneteenth as a salute to freedom through expression and creativity. The 60-minute performance includes an array of music, dance, and spoken word poetry from talented local artists including: Rita Cohen from Tidewater African Cultural Alliance, Corey and LaQuita Staten from Atumpan Edutainment, Bill Armstrong from Tidewater Bluegrass Music Association, Kanya Edmonds and Author Kween Yakini. The event was directed by Brittney S. Harris and produced by the Zeiders American Dream Theater. Following the performance, WHRO’s Lisa Godley will lead a community discussion about African and African American Culture, the importance of reconnecting music to cultural origins, and more. In accordance with current health and safety guidance, guests who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 will not be required to wear a mask or face covering while in the Sandler Center. Those who have not been fully vaccinated yet will be required to wear a mask or face covering.

Free Musical Performance to celebrate African American Music Month (Virginia Beach)

To close out the weekend, the Virginia Beach History Museums and Princess Anne Country Training School/Union Kempsville High School Alumni & Friends Association will host a free musical performance to celebrate African American Music Month! This year's African American Music Month Celebration will be held June 20 at the Renaissance Academy grounds (5100 Cleveland Street, Virginia Beach, VA 23462), and features a Hampton Roads’ favorite, TFC Band, with their signature musical blend of Classic Soul, Motown, Funk and more! The show also features vocalist and former Hampton Roads news reporter Becky Livas, as well as a Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate Ambassador from Teens With a Purpose! Performances will run from 3:30pm-5pm. The Princess Anne County Training School/Union Kempsville High School Museum will be open starting at 3pm on June 20th, and will remain open during and after the show, allowing audiences to learn about the first high school in Virginia Beach for African Americans. Be among the first to visit the museum since COVID-19 restrictions have lifted!

Juneteenth: Emancipation and Celebration - Virtual Event
When: Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at 7pm
Description: Fragments of Freedom Theatre Productions presents "Juneteenth: Emancipation and Celebration through Spoken Word Theatre and Music," featuring the talents of spoken word artists and award-winning soul/R&B artist K'bana Blaq. Written and directed by Hampton playwright, Marie St. Clair, this moving and memorable experience will illuminate the origins and meaning of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Spoken word artists from the Hampton Roads area: Dreason Ruckett, L.E.V.I. and Aundre Raashard, will perform their original pieces with actors and singers to share the history, and celebrate the progress attained by generations past and present in the fight for freedom.
K’bana Blaq will debut new music in the concert portion of the evening, directly after the spoken word theatre presentation. The new original music is from his yet to be released album, “Chocolate Freedom.” K'bana Blaq was awarded the 2021 R&B/Soul Artist of the Year and Music Video of the Year for Virginia by Veer Magazine.
