2026 VA + Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate

Virginia Youth Poet Laureate Program

This great opportunity is back again in 2026 – applications close Feb 28th!! VA + Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate is a joint program of Teens with a Purpose, Hampton Roads Youth Poets, and in partnership with Urban Word, supported by PEN Center USA and the Academy of American Poets.

Spoken word artists, poets, rappers, writers and emcees are invited to enter to win a chance to represent the state of Virginia as the Virginia or Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate.

The winner will also earn the right to apply for the National Youth Poet Laureate.

Youth Poet Laureate – The Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate (HRYPL) and Virginia Youth Poet Laureate (VAYPL) programs are prestigious initiatives that celebrate and amplify the voices of young poets who use their art to inspire change, foster civic engagement, and showcase creative leadership. These programs provide a platform for talented youth to share their unique perspectives through poetry, spoken word, and activism. Register here through Feb 28, 2026.

ImmortALL is a dynamic and powerful finale event of the Hear This Youth Poetry Festival that celebrates the transformative power of spoken word, history, and youth perspectives. The event brings together young poets, community leaders, and audiences to explore the intersection of local history, current events, and the lived experiences of teens.
