Things the kids remember…

When I was young, I remember when Disney Movies came out. It was a big deal in our family. We would take a Saturday and go up to the movie theater, get popcorn and drinks and watch the Disney movie. I remember seeing “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Aladdin” in the movie theater. But most of all, I remember spending time with my mom, dad, and brother. It was so much fun having a family day and I still remember how exciting and fun those days were!

Now that I have a family of my own, I want to take time to make memories with my family. But lets be honest, it’s not that simple. We are busy! I am running errands, getting groceries, working, and running around doing extracurricular activities. I sometimes get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life and forget to slow down and “make memories.”

My daughter isn’t going to remember that I didn’t have a gourmet meal one night and had to eat Ramon Noodles because I didn’t go grocery shopping. But she will remember that we took the evening to decorate the Christmas tree. She won’t remember running errands, but she will remember stopping at the park on the way home and swinging and sliding and playing!

I want my daughter to remember the family game nights, the traditions at Christmas, the day we went to the carnival, and so on. It’s time I start slowing down and remembering the important things in life.

If you are anything like me, you may struggle with this same thing, so I want to challenge you (and myself) to slow down and start “making memories” with your family. Start some traditions. Have some fun, because that is what your kids will remember the most!
