Getting Started With Golf for Kids in Hampton Roads

Golf is one of the few sports a child can start in elementary school and keep playing for life. Most kids in Hampton Roads get started in one of a few ways: group junior clinics led by a course’s teaching professional, private lessons, week-long summer golf camps, or youth programs that pair golf instruction with life skills.

Programs vary in format, schedule and price, and many offer beginner-friendly options alongside more advanced instruction. Use the city-by-city lists above to find golf lessons, camps and practice facilities closest to you.

What Age Can Kids Start Golf Lessons?

Many junior programs accept children as young as 5 or 6, usually in short, play-based sessions focused on balance, grip and having fun. As kids grow, lessons move on to the full swing, putting and chipping, course etiquette and eventually playing holes. Every program sets its own age ranges and skill levels, so check each listing before you register.

Older kids who want some competition can look for junior tournaments or team formats such as PGA Jr. League, where offered.

What Your Child Needs for Their First Golf Lesson

You don’t need to buy a set of clubs right away. Many clinics and camps can provide clubs for beginners, so ask before you shop. When you do buy, choose junior clubs sized to your child’s height rather than cut-down adult clubs, which are usually too heavy and stiff for a small swing.

For the first few sessions, comfortable athletic clothes, sneakers, a water bottle, sunscreen and a hat are usually plenty. Many courses have a dress code once players are out on the course, so check ahead before your child’s first round.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign Up

Ask about the student-to-instructor ratio, whether lessons stay on the driving range or include time on the course, and whether equipment is included in the price. It is also worth asking whether the course offers junior rates for range balls or rounds, so your child can keep practicing between lessons.
