Microbe Detectives: Microbiology Camp for Kids at ODU

This summer your child can discover the fascinating world of microbiology at our Summer Microbiology Camp for students in grades 4-6!

Held at Old Dominion University, this hands-on camp teaches students to use microscopes, grow bacterial cultures, and identify unknown microbes. Campers will explore industrial applications by using microbes to make sauerkraut and other food products. They will also develop social skills as they work with other children to investigate a bacterial outbreak.

While on campus they will have opportunities to experience campus life by visiting the university dining hall, touring campus, and engaging with professors in weekly research symposiums.

We went to the museum for an after hours special event and got to see both of the WWII hangars with the aircraft. It was amazing. There were volunteers there to tell us about the planes. They are all pristine and fully restored. You literally walk amongst these planes around, under and can see them up close! Very cool place!

We drove to VA Beach to check this Museum off our "adventure" list. So glad we did, the staff was great! The gentleman that greeted us was very knowledgeable and gave us a backstory of some of the planes and history. They have quite a few planes there and upstairs is a cool collection of items. We definitely enjoyed our time there and the gift shop has alot of cool things as well!

I'm giving five stars, because the fact of the matter is the individuals that volunteered here or work here. Actually cared, and we're glad to be there. That's huge for me, because if you're gonna have a place like this, be enthusiastic about it, be glad you're there, which everybody was. Not to mention the information that they had about different things were also plentiful. The hangers could be a little more interactive where you could get up closer to the planes maybe in look into some of them, but they were still very cool. I did disagree with the $350 price tag to get a quick flight in one of the planes, which to me fuel costs are not that high. I mean, who in the world can afford that amount of money? They gotta change that or not. Because that's just outrageous and screams we cater to a certain sect of folk...I mean we the little people are helping keeping this place going to, by buying regular tickets and merchandise, I wanted to go so bad, but oh well... Anyway, It's a pretty big area and we spent three hours there total. It's definitely worth going, and I am a critic as you can see from the things that I review. So again, it's definitely worth going✌????

What a cool place! So many planes to see and learn about. Recommend a tour if you can catch one. Lots of extra details and stories you wouldn't get if touring alone! Even the bathrooms have history lessons on the walls.

I stay in Richmond, so more than two hours travel until this Museum. Nice location, very quiet and lot of green grass and tree around. If you want to spend a Sunday with you family or alone, this museum is the right place to visit. Recommended.

I enjoy visiting this museum. If your into aviation this place is a must. They have a variety of planes from WWI and WWII. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. There is a shop on site where you can buy tee shirts, jackets, trinkets, and much more in the genere of the museum.

I was there for a retirement ceremony, so I didn't have the chance to see everything. (It is a great setting for a military retirement.) The exhibits looked, and at least some of the historic aircraft outside were still flyable (and, in fact, were flown while I was there -- very cool). The staff were nice, the facilities were very well kept. It's a little out of the way; you have to know that it's there to find it (Google maps will be your friend) . If I'm back in that general area, I will definitely stop by for a longer visit.

Excellent collection of planes and Docent Tim was a great guide. If you enjoy World War I and II history, it’s a great stop to learn about the aviation side of the war. We even got to see a Corsair in flight on our Saturday visit. On Saturdays, they have a different plane take flight so it keeps you wanting to come back and see the next plane!

Jad a great time here! I was not expecting how much this place has to offer. When we got there we got to see an actual WW2 airplane take off to go to the reading ww2 air show. The tour was great and informative and was surprised with the amount of stuff they jave to offer when it comes to the history and items they have to show. I highly recommend giving them a visit!

If you’re an aviation buff, it’s well worth the visit! Many aircraft have been restored to flying condition. Very educational with a must see of both the WWI and German hangars (Flight sheds).

What a great family day trip. There are lots of great things to see and learn about. Very knowledgeable and helpful guides. This place is a lot bigger than I had thought. Various WW1 and WW2 planes and even a tower from England that was operated during WW2. A hanger that replicates those used by the French in WW1 . We spent a little over 3 hours here and really enjoyed it ????.

Don't miss this hidden gem! Inexpensive $17 adults, $15 senior/military/teacher. Kids are less.

Make sure to also take the guided tour. That is the highlight of the museum. Plus there is NO extra charge for the guided tour.

What an awesome experience for plane or history lovers! I brought my great nephews, the older a fan of WWII history. He wanted to see some of the planes he read about. He loved it all!
The collection itself was impressive. This is a well run museum. The gentlemen working were all so knowledgeable and enjoyed being there. From what we were told they have some great events and fly some of the planes regularly. Highly recommend visiting. Plan on about 2.5-3 hours.
