Night Surf Fishing at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge (Virginia Beach)

Night Surf Fishing is an annual activity at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Anglers may fish on the wildlife refuge beach until midnight during the month of October with a Special Use Permit. This program provides a unique opportunity to fish the wildlife refuge beach after dark during the time of year when large red drum move down the coast.
To purchase a Special Use Permit for this activity anglers must bring the following.
- $35.00, cash or check (made out to “U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service”)
- Fishing license, or Fisherman Identification Program number
- Photo ID

Age range High School (Grades 9-12), Young adult, Adult, (16 and up)
Permits are available on the following dates and times:
- September 17: 9:00am – 1:00pm
- September 18: 11:00am – 3:00pm
- September 23: 9:00am – 1:00pm
- September 26: 12:00pm – 3:00pm
- September 30: 9:00am – 1:00pm
- October 1: 1:00pm – 4:00pm
- October 2: 12:30pm – 4:00pm
- October 4: 8:30am – 11:00pm
- October 8: 8:30am – 3:00pm
- October 9: 12:30pm – 3:00pm
- October 10: 8:30am – 3:00pm
