Welcome Our New Advertising Partner: Virginia Living Museum!

Please help me give a warm welcome to our new advertising partner, Virginia Living Museum! Virginia Living Museum in Newport News has great things for kids to explore year-round but there are two new exhibits this summer that kids will love!

Dinos LIVE! is currently open only through the summer (ending Labor Day) and gives families a chance to go back more than 65 million years to the Cretaceous period, the heyday of dinosaurs when Tyrannosaurus rex ruled North America. Tremble at a growling T rex. Then watch a Edmontosaurus mother tend her young. There’s even a nest full of eggs ready to hatch.

The whole family can also get their hands dirty digging for fossils in the new tented outdoor dinosaur excavation area. Amateur paleontologists can search through a pile of sediment and take home the fossils they find. They can also help uncover real fossil bones of ancient whales. Four to five million years ago whales swam in an ocean that covered the Peninsula.

The Wild & Well Exhibit opened in June 2014 and is designed for children from PreK to 3rd grade. The exhibit offers hands-on exploration and learning about animal health, and also provides a secondary message about human health. Children can cook, clean, and care for native wild animals that live at VLM in the “Be the Keeper” area where they will find a play kitchen, food bins, and animal holding cages (for the life-sized stuffed animals). Exploring the balanced VLM animal diets that include a good mix of meat, vegetables, grains and vitamins will challenge the kids to make their own diets more healthy.

Does your child like to play Vet? In the “Be the Vet” area they can role play as a wildlife veterinary specialist and utilize the examination tables and tools, treatment materials and check out the display of actual wildlife X-rays. Treating the injured/sick animals will help children relate to their own illnesses and injuries.
