Celebrate the amazing 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing with these family events in Hampton Roads! Did we overlook an event? Submit updates and additions to this list HERE. 
 
Date: Applications extended through July 31st!
Description: The Center for Educational Partnerships at ODU, the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, the ODU Libraries, and the Slover Library present the 50th Anniversary Moon Landing Contest—“Voyages and Discoveries: Cross-Generational Reflections on the Significance of Space Exploration.” Did you watch the amazing, historic event when man first walked on the moon? What do you think will happen in space exploration in the future? Have you ever wanted to know more about space? Learn all about space and space exploration and enter to win awesome prizes. Talk with a child, teen, parent, grandparent, or neighbor and have a cross-generational discussion of this amazing event, space exploration, and technological advances in Space flight. Share your moon memories with a child or teen. Then create a written story, poem, or dialogue and an illustration to enter to win. Form a two-person team of an Adult+Teen or Adult+Child and share your stories and ideas. Your team can consist of any adult of 20 years or older and a child or teen 4-19 years old.

Description: MacGillivray Freeman Films is pleased to announce it has acquired the giant screen institutional distribution rights to Apollo 11: First Steps Edition, the all-archival, immersive documentary film from director Todd Douglas Miller and Statement Pictures. The approximately 40-minute film captures the experience of the first manned lunar mission, one of humanity’s greatest feats, featuring never before seen large format footage.

Experience the final frontier as the Tidewater Winds perform music of Broadway, TV and some of the greatest sci-fi music from Hollywood. We will blast off with Strauss’s “Zarathustra”, go to Mars, play the music of John Williams, Moonraker, Apollo 13, Star Trek, and Van Morrison’s “Moondance”. Come join us for music that is truly out of this world!

Description: Join in the worldwide celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch on July 16, 2019 by launching your own rocket! Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy on July 16, 1969, at 9:32 a.m. EDT then the first moon landing occurred on July 20, four days later. Neil Armstrong took …one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” The Global Launch is open to anyone who wants to participate. We will provide materials to create simple rockets to launch, then we’ll set them off at 9:32 a.m. to be part of the international celebration. All ages.

Description: Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy on July 16, 1969, at 9:32 a.m. EDT. Please join us, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, and Space Camp in a worldwide celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch by launching your own rocket!  We’ll meet at 9:00 a.m. to make our rockets, and then simultaneously launch them at 9:32 a.m. to commemorate this historic event in space exploration!  All Ages.  All materials provided. Description: Join The Mariners’ Museum and Park as it takes on a mission from July 20, 1969, to commemorate one of the most iconic events in American history – the first humans landing on the Moon! Bring your family to celebrate this monumental achievement for all of mankind with family-friendly programming throughout the Museum, which includes: Hands-on building and craft activities, Interpretive stations highlighting artifacts and unique maritime connections to space exploration, Interesting topics on space and deep sea travel, the recovery of Apollo 11 by the USS Hornet, early Polynesian navigation and the stars, discovering and understanding the moon, women in space, and so much more. Come along this journey from 50 years ago, and explore when humans first ventured into what was once considered the final frontier – space!

Description: Join the Hampton History Museum at Air Power Park for a day of family fun celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing. Explore Hampton’s contributions to space flight and the first steps on the moon. Be among the first to see the fully restored “Little Joe” rocket that played a key role in testing systems for the moon mission. Groove to music from the 1960s while enjoy interactive programs and historical displays surrounded by vintage 1950s and 1960s planes, jets, rockets and the park’s retromodern geodesic dome housing a museum filled with model aircraft and space vehicles. In celebration of NASA’s 50th Anniversary of the Apollo Program, NASA Langley Research Center will provide hands-on activities and exhibits focusing on its contributions to the Apollo program, plans to return to the Moon and the Artemis program.

Description: Old Dominion University will host a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing on July 20, highlighted by a concert by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra (VSO) that will feature a special composition. The concert is one of many events. Among other highlights of the celebration: Planetarium events, food trucks and local breweries, and activities for children including building and launching your own rockets, face painting, balloon artists, bouncy houses, straw rockets and a chemistry magic show.
