Meet the Sheroes Event in Hampton Roads VA

Meet a Hampton Roads Shero!

It takes a strong woman to choose a male-dominated career path, but it takes a brave woman to inspire the youth to follow in her footsteps. Jami Salvio took on the challenge in 2014 and has successfully produced five years of Camp Fury Hampton, a Girl Scout camp coordinated with the Hampton Fire Department.

Alongside her student campers, Jami was also a Girl Scout when she was in the fifth grade. Jami’s previous Girl Scout history and the experience she had when going through the academy, were the driving forces behind bringing Camp Fury to the Hampton Roads area.

Camp Fury 2018 provided a realistic experience for girls to get a glimpse into the life of a firefighter while learning to become more confident, gain courage and respect. Jami has one rule for the camp, and that is that the girls say “I’ll try” and not “I can’t.” She believes that “girls can do anything they want to as long as they push for it.” She shared a story about a young girl that attended camp, she had trouble climbing the ladder her first year, but came back the next year and was able to scale the whole ladder no matter how much it scared her. It is stories like this that keep Jami going and allow her to run this program every year.
