Light The Elizabeth - Welcome Lafayette

When General Lafayette arrived in Norfolk on October 22, 1824, Portsmouth lit 42 bonfires to cheer this Revolutionary War hero from across the river. Come relive all the historic excitement on the waterfront with a spectacular high-tech twist! It’s FREE & open to the public. 

Where: Guests are invited to gather in the park just south of High Street Landing in Portsmouth to view the fountains of light and the laser light show.

Schedule: October 22, 2024

4:30pm Lafayette arrives in Norfolk! The waterfront arrival ceremony will be held at Fountain Park at 430pm next to the Waterside building, about 200 yards from where Lafayette originally landed!

5:30pm Lafayette boards the American Rover for a sunset cruise

Just After Sunset/6:30pm: The Portsmouth Seawall will be lit by 42 Fountains of Light to welcome Lafayette, as Portsmouth residents wave back to the General as he sails by!

Don’t miss this historic event on Tuesday, October 22nd where you will be able to see 42 fountains of light along with a laser light show in celebration of Lafayette!
