Description: Through story and song, Master Storyteller Sheila Arnold shares the experiences of enslaved people who travelled local waterways on their journey to liberty.

Most of the stories are from an 1870s book written by William Still, a Conductor for the Underground Railroad and Secretary of the Philadelphia Abolitionist Society.  His book shares the stories of over 500 people who ran from slavery, including some who used the locks, canals and waterways to escape.

Explore over 400 years of the past in our galleries, and view the special exhibit “Teetotalers and Moonshiners: Hampton’s Prohibition Story” on the second floor before it closes on February 4.
