12-2pm Happy Birthday Dr. King at Blyden Library (Norfolk)- In conjunction with Phi Delta Kappa Sorority, Blyden will hold a birthday celebration for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. You’re invited to create your own special cards of hope, peace and prosperity in his honor. Additionally, our grand finale will be a readers theatre production titled THE STORY OF A DREAM. Refreshments will be served.

7pm “Songs for a Dreamer: A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” (Norfolk) The Virginia Symphony Orchestra presents A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday, January 16, 2012

9am-12pm 13th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (Norfolk) on Monday, January 16 at Calvary Revival Church. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate in the event that centers on community service and youth literacy. All details for the event can be found HERE

9am-1pm Martin Luther King Beach Clean-up at False Cape State Park (Virginia Beach). Join us for a day where volunteers participate in cleaning up ocean shorelines! Help keep our beaches beautiful and safe by picking up shoreline debris. At the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center you will find transportation into False Cape. Bring bottled water, gloves, sunscreen, and snacks. Reservations are required. No charge.

11am – Annual Suffolk City-wide Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration (Suffolk) at Tabernacle Christian Church. Featuring the Presentation of the 2012, I Have A Presentation Award, Suffolk Community Award and Award Winning Essays by Suffolk Students.

11am-5pm Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration at Newsome House (Newport News)-Crafts and storytelling for children from 11am to 1pm. “Martin’s Big Words” will be read at 12 Noon; at 1pm there will be a special presentation by 10 yr old Malique Hawkins. He will perform his award winning speech “Why I Dream”. My Friend Martin, an animated movie about MLK will be shown at 2:00pm and again at 3:30pm. Celebrate Dr. King’s birthday as a family!
