USS Monitor Turret Recovery Celebration

Don’t miss the celebration of local history this Saturday, in honor of the 20th Anniversary of the USS Monitor’s Turret Recovery! This event has activities for the entire family to enjoy.

When: Saturday, August 6, 2022 from 10am – 3pm

Where: The Mariners’ Museum, 100 Museum Dr, Newport News, VA 23606

Cost: All activities are included with $1 admission. Free for Mariners’ Museum Members.

Description: On August 5, 2002, the sun cast its rays upon the turret of USS Monitor for the first time in 140 years as it emerged from the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. To celebrate this historic occasion, The Mariners’ Museum and Park will host a community event to recognize this incredible achievement 20 years ago and the enduring legacy of USS Monitor.

  • In-gallery Activities, such as a special scavenger hunt exploring the USS Monitor Center, a fun STEM activity to learn about excavation, and a virtual journey with NOAA exploring the Monitor shipwreck.
  • Guest Lectures with Dr. John Broadwater, former superintendent at Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, and Will Hoffman, Museum director of conservation and chief conservator.
