YVCHR Volunteer Project – PORT Winter Shelter (Shift 1) at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church (Newport News)

Location: Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church
Details: Youth will set up, prepare and serve a hot meal to the unhoused guests at the PORT winter shelter.
Age Requirement: Volunteers must be at least 14 yrs old to volunteer.
Special Considerations: Youth will need to be in comfortable modest clothing and closed toe athletic shoes as we will be standing and moving around the entire evening. Youth can sign up for 1 or both shifts.
Organization being served: LINK of Hampton Roads. PORT is an emergency winter shelter with the intent to house the homeless on the coldest nights of the year, ensuring no one dies on the streets. Starting in 1991 – now in its 34th year, PORT serves upwards of 120 people per night for a total of 20 weeks during the winter.
