Winter Water Fowl Walk at Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve (Portsmouth)

The waters of Lake Ballard and Hoffler Creek are currently swimming with overwintering ducks! These birds have traveled up to 3,000 miles from their northern homes to utilize the temperate waters and abundant food of Hoffler Creek and Lake Ballard.Join Dr. Shawn Dash (Hampton University) for an illuminating presentation focused on our seasonal guests and their winter behaviors, like courtship. Then, walk out to Lake Ballard and Hoffler Creek to observe stunning species like the Bufflehead, Ring-necked Duck, American Wigeon, and even the Eurasian Wigeon utilizing our preserves critical habitats.
