From the first thunderclap of Fanfare 250 by Noah D. Taylor to the heartfelt close of This Is My Country, Tidewater Winds presents an evening that traces the soul of America — from its revolutionary beginnings to the rich, diverse musical landscape that defines us today.
The program opens with bold patriotic splendor, featuring John Williams’ cinematic The Patriot, the luminous By Dawn’s Early Light by Dawson, and Sousa’s triumphant Hail to the Spirit of Liberty. Selections from the Broadway classic 1776 transport listeners to the passionate debates and daring courage of America’s founding moment, while Colonial Scenes by Mark Wolfram and Marilyn Harris paints a vivid picture of life in early America.
The evening takes an exciting turn with a World Premiere Performance of Give Me Liberty! by Buddy White — a moment not to be missed — followed by the irresistible energy of Duke Ellington’s Caravan in Saucedo’s dynamic arrangement and the timeless Americana of Aaron Copland brought to life in Copland Portrait.
Lighter moments delight with the familiar charm of I’ve Been Working on the Railroad, while The American Dream by Jim Beckel reflects on the promise and possibility at the heart of our national story.
It all culminates in a stirring, unified statement: This is my country — and tonight, this music is ours to share.
