First Class Delivery: The Roanoake Voyage and Virginia Dare at Isle of Wight County Museum (Smithfield)
August 18 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
On August 18, 1587, Virginia Dare became the first child born in the Americas to English parents. Her parents, Eleanor and Ananias, were part of the Roanoke Colony, an early attempt by the English to establish a permanent settlement in the New World. Her birth was recorded by her grandfather John White, governor of the colony. White returned to England seeking supplies. It was three years before he could secure passage back to Roanoke Island, and upon his return he found the colonists had vanished.
Join Mark Campbell, philatelist and retired U.S. Navy lithographer, as he highlights today’s history with a deep dive into stamps from the U.S. Postal Service which help tell this story.
