Historical Interpreters bring to life celebrated heroes to share their stories. Meet 18th century boat pilot Cesar Tarrant (portrayed by Antonio Pitts), who was enslaved and served in the Virginia Navy. Learn about his pivotal role in the Revolutionary War Battle of Hampton. One of Hampton’s “Human Computers,” Mary W. Jackson (portrayed by Aviance Jenkins), from the best-selling book “Hidden Figures,” by Margot Shetterly, shares her life and accomplishments.
Other highlights include a presentation by former NASA Administrator Clayton Turner speaking about NASA’s history in Hampton. Our historians, curators, and other museum professionals, including the museum’s former curator Mike Cobb and former Deputy Director and Curator Allen Hoilman, will talk about how museums collect and use artifacts to tell stories.
Set sail to win our “Gutter Regatta” by making and racing your own miniature sailboat. Mesmerize your friends with Ocean Waves you can craft using a jar and various oils and food coloring. Join educator Kris Peters to learn how mariners navigated by the stars with an astrolabe.
