Exhibit: 1939 Alexandria Library Sit-In at Portsmouth Main Library (Portsmouth)
January 13 - February 28
1939 Alexandria Library Sit-In
This upcoming exhibit highlights one of the earliest nonviolent civil rights protests in U.S. history. In 1939, five young Black men peacefully challenged segregation by sitting down to read inside a whites-only public library — an act of courage that helped lay the groundwork for future sit-ins and the broader Civil Rights Movement.
Join us as we reflect on this powerful moment and kick off the Library’s Black History Month programming.
