December Homeschool Day at The Virginia Living Museum (Newport News)

Homeschoolers and their families enjoy reduced admission and access to educational programs. Paid programs are offered for different age groups.

For the Littles: “Salamanders”
Time: 9:15–9:45 a.m.
Recommended Ages: 3–5
Description:
Join us for a special storytime designed just for our youngest homeschoolers. We’ll read a story, enjoy a hands-on activity, and meet one of our animal ambassadors. This month, we’ll discover salamanders—learning about their slimy skin and the habitats they call home.

Price: $4 child member | $5 child non-member | Adults (18+) free with ticket (museum admission not included)

Animal Adaptations
Time: 10:00–10:45 a.m.
Recommended Ages: 6+
Description:
How do animals thrive in the wild? Discover the fascinating world of adaptations! Participate in fun, interactive activities and meet animal ambassadors as we explore the clever ways wildlife survives and thrives in its natural habitat.

Salamander Survey
Time: 1:00–2:30 p.m.
Recommended Ages: 12+
Description:
Step into the role of a conservation scientist and take part in our Salamander Survey Project! This biomonitoring survey helps identify salamander species living on the Virginia Living Museum property. Learn about biodiversity sampling, the importance of salamanders in forest ecology, and how you can help protect these fascinating creatures—all under the guidance of our Herpetology and Education teams.

Price: $12 member student | $14 non-member student
(One adult may accompany each student in an observational capacity only; valid museum admission required. Student and adult admission not included.)
