The CHKD Junior Volunteer Program – Returning in 2024

Children's Hospital of the King's Daughers

If you have an Active Teen who is interested in working with children, and/or within the medical field this is a wonderful opportunity for great experience!

Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD) will begin accepting volunteers for their Junior Volunteer Program on March 1, 2024. Applicants must be 15 or older by June 1, 2024.

Program Description:  The Junior Volunteer program is divided into multiple sessions, each lasting 2-3 weeks. Volunteers should request a session that does not conflict with other summer plans such as camps and vacations.

Volunteers report to their volunteer assignment on weekdays, Monday – Thursday only (during each summer) and can choose a morning shift (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.) or an afternoon shift (1 – 4 p.m.). The program offers limited roles that involve patient contact; however, the MAJORITY of the volunteer opportunities are strictly office-based.

Assignments are available at the main hospital campus in downtown Norfolk, as well as many satellite centers including Virginia Beach, Newport News, Chesapeake, and Suffolk. The program fills based on a first-come, first-served basis and at the discretion of Volunteer Services management. Service areas include:

  • Patient Interactions (in playroom and at bedside)
  • Staff support in various clinics and offices
  • Gift Shop
  • Surgical Services
