The Story Behind MyActiveChild.com
Have you ever moved to a new area and wondered where to even start when it comes to finding things to do with your kids?
Have you searched endlessly online for family-friendly events, swim lessons, dance classes, karate programs, or library story times—and wished it was all in one place?
Me too.
MyActiveChild.com began on a long Thanksgiving road trip in 2010 not long after the picture above this post was taken. I was driving back to Hampton Roads from Boston with my 2-year-old, my 5-month-old, and our oversized muppet of a dog—listening to Elmo singing loudly on repeat. My husband was deployed, and like many parents, I was already thinking about what we’d do the next week to stay active and connected in our community.
I kept replaying conversations from friends:
“Where’s a good dance class for toddlers?”
“Does anyone know of soccer for little kids?”
“Have you found a fun library program yet?”
That’s when the next thought hit me: What if there was just one place to find all the local activities for kids and families in Hampton Roads? A searchable, local guide with a calendar of events and listings of local programs.
And just like that, MyActiveChild.com was born.
Since launching in 2011, this site has been a labor of love—created for every parent, grandparent, caregiver, or newcomer asking, “What is there to do with kids near me?”
