Please note, most of these Summer Reading Programs require you to sign up to participate. Make sure you sign up at the beginning of the Summer to log all of your 2021 Summer reading!

In addition to the reading logs and prizes many of the area libraries (and many bookstores) will be having special events and activities throughout the summer. Make sure to check out the great variety of local talent and entertainment!

 

 

CHESAPEAKE PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING CHALLENGE 

  • Chesapeake Public Library Summer Reading Program - A story for everyone - June 20 - August 15, 2021
  • Tails and Tales - Track your own goals and win prizes. Pick up a reading log at your local library and add your "tail" to a giant animal display! (Birth- Grade 5) 
  • It's Lit - Earn digital badges for a chance to win fun prizes. (Grades 6 - 12) 
  • BookQuest: The Challenge - Embark on an epic journey to read 52 books this year! (Ages 16 and up)

HAMPTON PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM 

  • Summer Reading June 19 - July 30, 2021. Check out some of the great programs available through the Hampton Public Library Summer Reading Program on our website Calendar  or the HPL Website.
  • Additional Info: We are going to have our virtual program for six weeks—Friday, June 12 through Friday, July 24, for babies, children, and teens. Readers can sign-up through Beanstack.com under ‘Hampton Public Library’ or through the Beanstack app on your mobile device. As you complete each week's numbered badge, visit the library to pick up your coupon prize! All other badges earn additional entries into the raffle prize drawings on weeks 2, 4, and 6.  Adult participants will be entered to win a weekly drawing for a free book and  will also be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing on August 2: an Amazon Kindle Fire, courtesy of the Friends of the Hampton Public Library!
 

NEWPORT NEWS PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM 

  • Summer Reading Program June 21 - July 31, 2021.

  • Additional Info: The theme of our 2021 Summer Reading Challenge is, You Are What You Read. We will have all kinds of information and fun programs about healthy living.  Register and log all of your reading minutes to be eligible to win weekly prizes.  All the minutes you read and log will be added to the community goal of 500,000 minutes. That averages out to only 12 hours total, or 2 hours each week. The more you read, the more chances you have to win!
 

NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM

  • Summer Reading Program June 26 - August 7, 2021

  • Additional Information: The theme is “Tails & Tales,” and this year, we’re bringing you SRP, and all our special events, classes, and programs entirely online. Participate in SRP right from your home, and watch virtual programs all summer long on the Library’s Facebook page.  People of all age groups, from babies to adults, and everyone in between, can read books to earn virtual badges and opportunities to win prizes!
 

PORTSMOUTH PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM 

  • Join Portsmouth Public Library from June 21st to July 31st for their 2021 Tails and Tales Summer Reading Program! They will have virtual programs on their Youtube channel and craft kits available for pick up. Readers from ages birth to 17 years old can pick up reading logs at their local PPL branch and turn in the completed log for a prize!

POQUOSON PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM

  • Additional Information: Register to get started with your Summer Reading Challenge. If you already have a login, all you have to do is sign in and update your information. Click the Beanstack link to participate online or download the Beanstack Tracker mobile app to your device.
 

SUFFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY CAMP SPL SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

  • Summer Reading Program June 7 - August 15, 2021

  • Additional Information: This year's Summer Reading Challenge will kick off on Monday, June 7 and ends on Sunday, August 15, 2021. Remember to download and print your Camp SPL pennant at any time to decorate and drop off at the library to display. Don't have a printer? Use our Print from Anywhere service! 
  

VIRGINIA BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING CHALLENGE 

  • Summer Reading Program June 7 - August 14, 2021

  • Additional Information: PVBPL encourages children and families to "check out and read" this summer. Visit your library, in person or online, and check out books, e-books, audiobooks, magazines, graphic novels - whatever you like. Then, take some time to "check out" of life's daily demands and spend it on reading! VBPL is offering age-specific Summer Reading Challenge goals and incentives, along with some creative activities. Parents can participate in our Reading Road Trip to read for pleasure and model reading as a family.

Barnes & Noble's Summer Reading Program 
  • Kids in grades 1-6 can read any eight books this summer and record them in your Summer Reading Journal. Then bring their completed journal to any participating Barnes & Noble Store to receive a FREE book off of their list. See 2021 details here.
Books-A-Million's Summer Reading Adventure 
  • Children read any 4 books from the reading list, write about the books you're read in your log book and show your completed log book to a store associate to receive your free Because of Winn Dixie Notepad(while supplies last). See 2021 details here
  • Chuck-E-Cheese's Reward Calendar Program is ongoing. You can find many different reward calendars on the Chuck-E-Cheese website. One of them tracks books read- when your child reads each day for 2 weeks (and completes the form) it can be redeemed for 10 tokens. Note, a food purchase is required.
Scholastic's Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Challenge is currently underway (April 26 - September 3, 2021)
  • Kids can read books and track reading online in order to earn rewards. 
  • The longer a child extends their reading streak, the more digital experiences they earn!  Kids can read any book of their choice and download and print a report of their reading progress at any time.
