Hampton Roads: Summer Reading Programs 2022

Please note, most of these Summer Reading Programs require you to sign up to participate. Make sure you sign up at the beginning of the Summer to log all of your 2022 Summer reading!

In addition to the reading logs and prizes many of the area libraries (and many bookstores) will be having special events and activities throughout the summer. Make sure to check out the great variety of local talent and entertainment!

CHESAPEAKE PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

• June 21 – August 14, 2022
• Track your goals, earn prizes and Dizzy dollars.

HAMPTON PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM

• Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading: June 17 – July 29, 2022. Check out some of the great programs available through the Hampton Public Library Summer Reading Program on our website Calendar  or the HPL Website.
• Additional Info: We are going to have our program for children, teens and adults. Readers can sign-up through Beanstack.com under ‘Hampton Public Library’ or through the Beanstack app on your mobile device. AAs you complete each week’s numbered badge, visit the library to pick up your coupon prize! All other badges earn additional entries into the raffle prize drawings on weeks 2, 4, and 6. Adult participants will be entered to win a weekly drawing for a free book. Every participant will also be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing on August 1: an Amazon Kindle Fire, courtesy of the Friends of the Hampton Public Library!

PORTSMOUTH PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM

• Join Portsmouth Public Library from June 21^st to July 30th for their 2022 Ocean of Possibilities Summer Reading Program! Readers from birth to 17 years of age will log their books on their Portsmouth Public Library Beanstack account. Once they have completed the badges for their age category (0-8 years old, 9-11 years old, and 12-17 years old), they will be eligible to pick up a prize!

POQUOSON PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM

• Additional Information: Get ready, summer is almost here, so let’s sail away on Oceans of Possibilities. All ages are invited to jump into our Summer Reading Challenge. Complete 5 activities on Challenge Card 1 to earn a prize. Repeat the same on Challenge Cards 2 and 3 for more prizes and to win the Summer Reading Challenge. SUFFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY CAMP SPL SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

• Additional Information: 2022 is the summer of big reading goals! Library staff are taking the challenge of reading 22 books in Summer of 2022! Join them in this big goal or set a reading goal of your own. You could win a variety of fun prizes this summer by logging books and/or activities for the Summer Reading Challenge.

VIRGINIA BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

• Additional Information: VBPL encourages children and families to read this summer. VBPL is offering age-specific Summer Reading Challenge goals and incentives, along with some creative activities. Parents can participate in our Passport to Adventure to read for pleasure and model reading as a family.

WILLIAMSBURG REGIONAL LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM

• Additional Information: Summer reading is for everyone! Kids and teens are invited to stop in the Summer Reading Room at either library once a week starting June 13 to share what they’ve been reading. Log your reading at wrl.beanstack.org to earn a free book from our end-of-summer book fair on top of fun weekly prizes. Plus, we’ll have movies, crafts, performers, and so many more activities all summer long.

YORK COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM 

• Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Challenge: July 5 – August 13, 2022
• There are also programs highlighting family fun at the library all Summer, the listings can be found on our website Calendar and on the YCPL Website.
• Additional Information: All ages are welcome to participate. Our community reading goal is to read 5,000 hours by or before August 13, 2022. Keep track of your reading through the library’s Beanstack site or the Beanstack app. Don’t forget to visit the library to participate in all of the fantastic fun we’re planning.

Summer Reading Program at MWR Libraries – Military Families in Hampton Roads

Barnes & Noble’s Summer Reading Program

• Kids in grades 1-6 can read any eight books this summer and record them in your Summer Reading Journal. Then bring their completed journal to any participating Barnes & Noble Store to receive a FREE book off of their list. See 2022 details here.

Books-A-Million’s Summer Reading Adventure 

• Children read any 4 books from the reading list, write about the books you’re read in your log book and show your completed log book to a store associate to receive your free pencil pouch (while supplies last). See 2022 details here.

Chuck-E-Cheese’s Reward Calendar Program

• Chuck-E-Cheese’s Reward Calendar Program is ongoing. You can find many different reward calendars on the Chuck-E-Cheese website. One of them tracks books read- when your child reads each day for 2 weeks (and completes the form) it can be redeemed for 10 free play points. Note, a food purchase is required.

Scholastic’s Summer Reading Home Base is currently underway (May 9 – August 19, 2022)

• By creating an account on Home Base, kids can join a community of readers and will be able to read books and stories; attend author events; interact with their favorite characters; play book-based games and activities; join dance parties; and more!
