DESCRIPTION:​In early spring hundreds of paddlers launch their vessels into the Dismal Swamp Canal’s dark\, mirrored waters. This historic waterway serves as the backdrop for Paddle for the Border\, an annual 7.5-mile paddling excursion to the North Carolina/Virginia border. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis annual event\, celebrating 21 years in 2026\, highlights the canal’s rich history\, which dates to 1763 when George Washington’s land company first surveyed the swamp before commissioning the waterway’s construction. In the 19th century\, the canal’s dense wetlands provided refuge for those enslaved traveling the Underground Railroad before continuing their journey north. \nThe fee is $65 per person.  After enjoying a pre-launch “grab-and-go” breakfast at the Dismal Swamp State Park\, in South Mills\, NC\, paddlers embark on the leisurely three-hour journey to cross the state line. They finish the day out with a picnic lunch on grounds of the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail at the Great Dismal Swamp Boat Ramp at Ballahack Rd. in Chesapeake\, VA. DESCRIPTION:Join our 5K race\, “Run to Breathe” on May 2nd\, to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation! The 5K timed and certified race will take place on Saturday\, May 2nd\, 2026\, at 9:00am at 1246 Dismal Swamp Canal Trail in Chesapeake\, VA.  Race Packet pickup\, at the event\, starts at 8:00 am. \nNearly 40\,000 people in the United States have cystic fibrosis: a progressive\, genetic disease that affects the lungs\, pancreas\, and other organs. They are moms\, dads\, sisters\, brothers\, daughters\, sons\, and friends who face the sobering prospect of a shortened lifespan.\nThe mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long\, fulfilling lives by funding research and drug development\, partnering with the CF community\, and advancing high-quality\, specialized care.\nNearly every CF drug currently available was made possible through Foundation support. These drugs are significantly improving quality of life and adding decades of life for people born with CF.  Yet\, many people with CF do not benefit from existing therapies. Our vision is a cure for every person with cystic fibrosis – a life free from the burden of this disease – and we will not leave anyone behind. \nBy joining our 5K race\, “Run to Breathe”\, you have an opportunity in your lifetime to be part of ending this disease\, while having a great time doing it!  Please consider joining us and celebrate breathing\, while helping to make medical history.

Park along Lilac Avenue by the Norfolk Highlands Primary School.\nFor Clean the Bay Day\, we will be working around Oaklette Bridge and Blue Heron Landing Park.  We will be weeding and mulching the roadside gardens\, doing a cleanup along the Park shoreline\, under the bridge\, and along Indian River Road.\nPlease wear closed-toe shoes\, a hat and bring work gloves and other items that may be useful.  Bring your favorite hand weeding tool\, if you have one. We will have water and snacks but we also always encourage folks to bring their own water in reusable bottles to minimize use of plastic bottles.
