SUMMARY:Great Gingerbread Train Competition Entry Period (Chesapeake)
DESCRIPTION:Entry period: November 14 – December 13\, 2025. \nGreat Gingerbread Train Competition participants are encouraged to learn about and craft trains that were vital to the region’s timbering and lumber industry in the Great Dismal Swamp from the 1830s until the mid-1900s\, using gingerbread cookie dough\, icing\, and other edible decorations. \nEntries should represent a train\, engine\, caboose\, or other railroad car\, either alone or in combination with other rail cars. Entries do not need to be exact replicas of trains that operated in the swamp during the 1800s through the mid-1900s; however\, incorporating an aspect of the Great Dismal Swamp into your entry is required. See additional rules and requirements below. \nAnyone can enter this competition. There are categories for 12 years old and under\, 13-17 years old\, and 18 years old and over and team entry. \nThis competition allows the community to learn more about the lesser-known history of the narrow-gauge trains\, which contributed to the thriving lumber industry centered in the Great Dismal Swamp\, which lasted for almost 200 years in the Tidewater region. This industry created numerous economic opportunities for many communities in the area of what is now Chesapeake.

DESCRIPTION:The Museum is actively under development. We are working hard to create an exciting experience in model railroading for you. We currently have 10 operational layouts in all the major scales\, a locomotive race track\, and a Carrera race car track. Come on by and see what we’re up to. \nWe will remain open to the public on Fridays\, Saturdays and Sundays\, from 12-6 PM\, so you can watch while the Museum is being developed. We will continue to have trains running on several different layouts. Admission is free. \nThe Museum Store is now open. We currently have brand items like T-shirts\, sweatshirts\, hoodies\, mugs and water bottles. We are current stocking shelves with pre-owned N scale railcars and locomotives\, which we can test before you buy. A book written by our own historian Warren Leister on The Birth of Virginia Beach is also for sale. We are slowly adding more items. We can order almost any model railroad gear\, scenery or train set in any gauge that you want. All proceeds over expenses go back into the Museum. So every purchase you make helps to support our mission to bring model railroading to the public where it can be enjoyed by everyone. \nOur S.T.E.A.M. Program is in full swing.
