Pelagic Wildlife Expedition (Virginia Beach)
July 11, 2021 @ 5:00 am - 6:00 pm
Experience the diversity the offshore waters off of the Mid-Atlantic have to offer as we head to the deep for our latest exploration!
Norfolk Canyon, about 70 miles offshore, has long been a hotspot for fishing. More effort into learning about the area has brought into focus that it’s not only a haven for fish, but a unique biological community for many other species. Join us as we head out to see the wildlife teeming around the outer shelf and slope waters of this Mid-Atlantic Canyon. While we explore, we will be collecting data about the species we observe and their behaviors with researchers on board.
Each trip course will vary based upon current sightings, but may include the following:
- cetaceans (fin whales, sperm whales, beaked whales, long-finned & short-finned pilot whales, Risso’s dolphins, short-beaked common dolphins, & Atlantic spotted dolphins)
- pelagic seabirds (various species of shearwaters, petrels, & terns)
- fish (ocean sunfish & hammerhead sharks)
- sea turtles (loggerhead & leatherback)
13 hour trip: 5AM-6PM
Ticket price: $120
- Sunday, November 8th
*As fall weather can be unpredictable, the following Sunday will be our built-in alternative in the event of poor boating conditions on the scheduled Saturday.
