Heroes and History Walking Tour (Portsmouth)

July 1, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

$20

Our apologies!  Due to circumstances beyond our control, this weekend’s Heroes and History Excursion cannot take place.  Please join us later in the month for an excursion June 17th as part of JUNETEENTH OLDE TOWNE!

The history of Portsmouth’s African Americans from the Colonial Era to the Civil Rights Movement is told in story and song during this 90-minute excursion led by characters representing real historic figures.  Includes an interior tour of Historic Emanuel AME, a station on the Underground Railroad.

Held the 1st Saturday each month, Historic Emanuel AME will open its sanctuary as part of the Heroes and History stop there. Founded in 1772, the congregation was the heart and soul of the Black community during slavery, reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights Movement. Hear the stories of heroes like Billy Flora, James Armistead Lafayette, Eliza Baines, Alfred Fountain, Clarissa Davis, Shadrach Minkins, George Bain, James Holley, and many more!

 Limited number of tickets available!
