“Awakening” | Todd Rosenlieb Dance Spring Concert Series (Norfolk)
March 3, 2023 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
The Todd Rosenlieb Dance Professional Company returns to the stage to round out their final concert of Season 17 at Old Dominion University on March 3 and 4 at 8PM to bring you their Spring Concert Series at the ODU University Theatre.
Artistic Directors’ Ricardo Melendez and Todd Rosenlieb along with guest choreographer Miranda Hashemi bring to the stage an evening of contemporary dance that promises an evening of passion, human emotion, and hope as our senses awaken to the movement we will witness on stage by our company of 12 professional dancers from all around the country!
“Awakening” Offerings:
Restricted (choreographed by Ricardo Melendez) – An experiment on contemporary sentiments of emotional exhaustion, sexual frustration, and generational approach to intimacy; Restricted challenges the audience to experience an unsettling juxtaposition of flow, texture, shapes, and rhythms. Restricted is scored by the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music: Partita for 8 Voices by America Composer Caroline Shaw and is performed by the virtuoso group: Roomful of Teeth. Restricted explores the boundaries of dance aesthetics and celebrates the fluidity and attack of contemporary dance approaches.
Into the Unknown (choreographed by Ricardo Melendez) – Inspired on the music by Jerzy Bawol played by virtuoso violinist Nigel Kennedy, Into the Unknown is a tribute to the dreams and aspirations of artists of the dance in their unrelenting journey to share their spirit through the language of dance. At times poetic yet also challenging the athleticism of these heavenly artists; this Contemporary modern work explores the longings and fears that make the life of an artist an exciting free fall into the unknown.
Shades of Influence (choreographed by Miranda Hashemi) – Shades of Influence is a brief inquiry into self-discovery and how that can be influenced by the varying connections and relationships with those around you. The piece is a mix of classical lines and contemporary movement framed by Vivaldi’s classic themes with emphasis on the varying layers of his composition. Whether interactions are large or small they can have a lasting effect on the people we are or become or have no lasting impact at all.
Nina (choreographed by Todd Rosenlieb) – Nina Simone was a dynamo of and artist and activist. Her catalogue of music changed the face of civil rights and the women’s movement here and abroad. Her ability to capture the spirit of the times and the passion of her purpose inspired Rosenlieb to create this many years ago starting as a 5-section dance transformed now into 13-sections for audiences to feel Nina’s words and emotions portrayed by movement.
Latin Sketches (choreographed by Ricardo Melendez) – Set to Three Latin American Sketches by American composer Aaron Copland; this exuberant and energetic work celebrates sentiments from the Latino community in America: from struggles to celebrations, friendships and obstacles. Latin Sketches combines staple movement phrases inspired on American modern dance pioneer techniques; the work employs archaic shapes and contemporary movement approaches to create a celebration of culture, full of energy and athleticism.
