Description: Guns are in more than one-third of all U.S. households, so they’re a very real danger to children, whether you own one or not. That’s why it’s important to talk to children about the potential dangers of guns— and what to do if they find one. If you do keep a gun in the house, it’s vital to keep it out of sight and out of the reach of children. This seminar is for parents and caregivers of children. Professionals are also welcome to attend.

The first half of the presentation will focus on gun safety and children. We will discuss:

• How to identify different types of weapons and how firearms work.

• Virginia concealed carry laws.

• Guns on school grounds and in houses of worship.

• Your responsibilities if you have a gun in your home and how to properly store firearms.

• Talking to your child about guns, including gun safety rules.

• Asking relatives and the parents of your child’s friends if they have guns — and if the guns are safely stored — before your child visits their homes.

The second half of the presentation will focus on active threat training. We will discuss:

• Recent events, such as the shootings in Parkland, Florida, and Sutherland, Texas.

• How to better prepare if you find yourself in an active threat situation.
