Norfolk Initiative for Chess Excellence (NICE)

Not too long ago I stumbled upon this great program happening in Norfolk and wanted to share it with you!

N.I.C.E. Chess (Norfolk Initiative for Chess Excellence) is a Norfolk based after-school mentoring program for youth where kids go to play chess. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Of course they do much more than learn chess…. they learn problem solving, patience, make strong connections with others, and have a great time doing it!

The program also works hard to make sure everyone is feels accepted at all levels of chess playing ability, from established chess players (and scholarship winners!) to beginning chess players.

Community partners include Norfolk Public School system, Norfolk State University, chess professionals, Grandmasters, a World Champion, Norfolk Police Anti-Crime Unit, the Virginian-Pilot Newspaper and the Carnegie Girls’ Math & Science Initiative called BrainCake.

This program is a totally free, volunteer-driven mentoring program. They currently meet Wednesdays at 4pm at the Lamberts Point Community Center 1251 West 42nd Street Norfolk, VA 23508. For more information and to get involved check out their website HERE.
