Where to watch the solar eclipse in Hampton Roads

The 2017 solar eclipse is coming up and there are lots of local events in the works! As always, make sure to call/check links to confirm events are happening as scheduled. Did we miss an event or update? Please CLICK HERE and we will get it on our list!

Reminder – it is NOT safe to look at the eclipse without solar eclipse glasses specifically designed to protect your eyes!! To make sure your solar eclipse glasses will protect your eyes make sure you have purchased them from a certified vendor (more information here).

Impact 2017 and Eclipse Expo (Newport News)

Description: An Eclipse Expo and free book giveaway, sponsored by the South Morrison Public Library, will feature learning activities and demonstrations about the total solar eclipse, which occurs on Monday, August 21. Free solar eclipse glasses while supplies last.

Solar Eclipse Watch Party (Carrollton)

Description: Come join us at the Carrollton Branch Library for our Solar Eclipse Watch Party! We will be handing out eclipse viewing glasses, showing the official NASA live stream of the event, have craft projects on hand for the kids, and will be giving away sno cones! This event is free and all ages are welcome!

Solar Eclipse 2017 at Indian River Library (Chesapeake)

HAMPTON

Solar Eclipse at VASC (Hampton)

Where: Virginia Air & Space Center 600 Settlers Landing Road Hampton VA

Description:  
We’ll have activities on the main floor that are all Solar Eclipse themed! Activities include the opportunity to see the sun through our Sun Telescope, venture through the Solarium, design UV beads that change in sunlight, create “Sun paper,” learn all about radiation, and more! The best part? You can experience a live stream of NASA coverage of the eclipse in our IMAX Theater, the largest screen in Hampton Roads. The first 250guests will have a guaranteed seat in the IMAX for the live stream AND receive a pair of NASA glasses for the eclipse.

Solar Eclipse Viewing at Main Library (Hampton)

Solar Eclipse Viewing Party at Main Library (Newport News)

Description: 
Main Street Library invites you to come view NASA’s Mega Cast, Live Streaming of the 2017 Solar Eclipse. This will be the first solar eclipse visible in the continental United States in 38 years. Come watch it from beginning to end as it moves across all of North America. As the eclipse becomes visible in our local area starting at 1:20, we will move outdoors for actual viewing. Glasses will be provided for safe viewing and refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Solar Eclipse Craft & Viewing at Pearl Bailey Library (Newport News)

Description: The moon will block out the sun! Join us for a STEM craft where we’ll build a viewer to watch the Solar Eclipse safely.  Don’t want to stay outside? We’ll be streaming the live view of the complete eclipse from NASA’s website.  All ages welcome! Peak eclipse time is 2:45pm, but the eclipse starts around 1:20p. Get here early to make your viewer before it starts!

Join us to watch the solar eclipse!  Eclipse glasses will be available upon request.  All ages are welcome.  A craft will also be provided in the Youth Services area.  The eclipse will begin around 1:20 P.M., and end shortly after 4:00 P.M.; peak eclipse time is 2:45 P.M.

Great American Eclipse at the Virginia Living Museum (Newport News)

Get ready for the Eclipse! View this rare celestial event at the VLM. We will offer telescope views of the Sun throughout the eclipse and provide eclipse glasses to our visitors for direct viewing. In inclement weather, we will attempt to display a live webcast of the total solar eclipse in the Abbitt Planetarium for all to enjoy. Included in museum admission.

The Great American Eclipse at ODU (Norfolk)

Where: ODU Kaufman Mall, Norfolk VA
When: Monday, August 21, 2017 from 1-4pm
Description: On the day of the eclipse, from 1:00-4:00, stop by Kaufman Mall on the ODU campus to get a spectacular view of through the Pretlow Planetarium’s telescopes. We’ll be giving away free eclipse glasses there too! We also have games and fun prizes planned. We are an official NASA sponsored viewing location, and they will provide some more handouts for us as well.

Total Eclipse of the Sun Party at Chuckatuck Library (Suffolk)

Where: Chuckatuck Library 5881 Godwin Boulevard Suffolk VA 
When: Monday, August 21, 2017 from 1-4pm 
Description: Watch the eclipse with special viewing glasses, enjoy science experiments, lawn games, and fun for all! At our location in Virginia, the sun will be a little over 86% covered by the moon at maximum eclipse. Please note that we cannot guarantee visibility of the eclipse. In the event of poor weather conditions we will attempt to watch NASA’s live streaming of it. We have a few hundred viewing glasses and they will be provided at the event while supplies last.
